"Let's build us a little fort"-tutorial

Hello, think I've been away for awhile? Yes, I needed a little break and made a PreFab area for a friends DM-ed campaign and while doing so I made a small tutorial. It may not be the best one out there because I only documented the process so he (and maybe others) can get a hint about area design. As everyone already knows - I'm a CEO, not an expert.

It's a small fort, inspired by an iron age - medieval circular village on the cold and dry flatland that I visited last summer. It's complete with animals and sounds and a pretty foggy DayNight cycle. Just place down the NPC's, heroes and start telling the story.

The PreFab will be available at the NWVault in a few days and the tutorial too. Meanwhile you can take a sneak preview of it here:

Oh, yes. Here's a fat bunch of screen shots for all the screenie junkies. Enjoy! Next week I'm back to Zork.

Thanks for reading

That is a great looking area. Very tempted to drop the area I've been slowing desecrate with my poor attempts in the toolset and use this instead!

Thanks for the tutorial too

Wow, another wonderful contribution to the community - a prefab and a tutorial to go with it! I can hardly wait to download this. Your screenshots had me smiling with anticipation the whole time. Great job!

This is another great looking prefab (and area design tutorials are ALWAYS welcome) - my favorite screenshots are the first and last. Awesome work, Amraphael!

That Iron Age fort is just amazing! :)

Long ago, I read about the Vikings and their use of circular forts, and this reminds me of those quite a lot. More specifically, there was one called Oakenthorp or something that looked like this one.

Hi Amraphael,

(I posted this in an earlier related comment post as well.)

What an amazing project you are working on, and what excellent Custom Content!

I have been looking around other people's blogs of late and came across yours in the search and been reading yours from your first post (including the comments). I suspect I will get up to date in the next day or so, but wanted to comment now because (in an earlier comment) I noticed E.C. Patterson mentioned my GUI tutorial. :)

(EDIT: The next comment is slightly out of context, but still applies.)

I used the GUI method myself to give the players some background and for them to help select their playing style. You could achieve the same thing from a conversation, but using a GUI looks more polished after experimenting with the options.

I never programmed GUIs before and simply looked over a few examples and worked them out "backwards". Someone of your very obvious talents would have no problem using them.

I would just like to understand some of the things you have done now ... and like everyone else, cannot wait for this release.

If you ever get the time to put together a tutorial on using Gmax and, for example, how you make an item and placeable and add them to the game, I for one would be one of the first to download it and try to build some of my own content.

GREAT WORK!

I will be a regular "eager reader" from now on. :)

Lance.

@jeclef,
Thank you for the friendly comments. You're right, tutorials are good. That way we can get more builders in to the NWN2 swamp, which hopefully means more great modules to play for us. So I'm just being selfish, releasing this stuff.

@Indira
You got an eye for it(as always Eketorp (Oakenthorp) it is :)
I went there last summer and it was pretty amazing. The sacrifice spot at the water hole is also inspired of that trip and the museum staff has been reported to the police for putting dead horse bodies at the site(!!!)

@The Bard of Althéa,
Thanks a lot! I'll certainly take a look at your tutorial as I have no clue about changing/creating GUIs.

The The World of Althéa is now on my blog roll.

I suppose a 3ds max tutorial would work with GMAX as the NWN2Import/Export plugin is the same. I'll take a look at it.

Hi Amraphael,

Thanks for adding me to your blog list. :)

By the way, you may know me better as Lance Botelle on other forums and so I have adjusted my blog identity to reflect that from now on.

If you do manage to write a tutorial on Gmax, I will definitely be among the first to download and read it. :)

Just remember to keep it really simple: How did you do the safe? Next, how did you make your trapdoor(with animation additions)? etc.

Are items handled differently from placeables? - That sort of thing. Anyway, I don't really know how to ask the right questions and so just hope it makes sense. :)

I will try reading more of your blog later on today.

Lance.
