It took me quite a while to figure out how to do it but here it is - The Walkable Rainbow - one of the most important objects in Zork. As usual there's some polishing left to do. For example a ugly spot at the base of the rainbow I left out in the screen shots and making the rainbow a bit fatter. But on the whole I'm quite satisfied with how it came out and you have to admit there's a great view over the White Cliffs from the top of a rainbow. One bottle of Newcastle Brown Ale for tonight!
"You are on a small, rocky beach on the continuation of the
Frigid River past the Falls. The beach is narrow due to the
presence of the White Cliffs."

That's just crazy... You're awesome - 'nuff said!
"sings" Somewhere where over a rainbow!
ok ok ok.... I'll stop singing.
I posted this over at bouncy rock! It is too cool not to spread the word!
Nifty stuff there :)
great stuff!
reminds me of that song...
"Red and yellow and pink and green purple and orange and blue... I can sing a rainbow...." ;)
Heh, that reminds me of the Idle Forums (the forums of "Idle Thumbs"), where one of the members programmed a forum bot that would allow you to play text adventures in a forum thread. I just checked back there, and they now actually have a sub forum just for playing Text Adventures/Interactive Fiction by use of the bot (Still beta, but it works).
It worked this way: The bot would do the starting post, and you would reply with the commands, just like you'd do when playing the Text Adventure in a regular interpreter. The bot would then reply to the post, with the result of your actions. Wash, rinse, repeat. It worked pretty well.
Of course, the first choice to test it with was "Zork". I had a lot of fun playing Zork there. I remember one time when I was on a real roll, because I was so familiar with the beginning parts of the game that I felt right at home, and even got to explore some new areas (I actually went into a direction I hadn't gone through before, including the rainbow.).
The difference from playing the game that way, as opposed to playing it in an interpreter was that in this case, you were not alone. Anyone could pipe in at any time and give commands. The first one to be posted after one of the bot's posts would be followed. It was quite a lot of fun.
But that day I was on a roll, I actually got a "Whoa! You're good at this!", because I got much farther than anyone had gotten before while using this experimental bot, apparently. I am not saying the others were not good at. I always assumed they were just fooling around, and some were just hadn't played the actual game before, so it wasn't surprising if they got lost at first. But still, I actually blushed when I got that comment. ^_^
The reason why your post reminds me of that occurence of me playing Zork on a forum (because as you might remember, I have started playing Zork countless times, before I abandoned it for a while, after which I had forgotten or lost my savegame name - so I never finished it so far. But the point is, you might remember I've played the game *a lot*.) was because it was on that day I was on such a roll that I found the rainbow and walked on it. I had heard of it before, but I had never actually reached it. But that time, I finally discovered it, and that's why this post brought that memory back to me. ^_^
- :) :) :) :) :) :) :)
Thanks everybody!
Even if it isn't a marvel of 3d modeling like many out there do it works pretty well. I had never worked with placeable walkmesh object before so the learning curve was steep. It isn't so much information on the topic out there so I had do learn by doing.
@Liso & Wyrin
Maybe you should do a duet, I notice a certain talent for it :)
@Jazhara7
Thanks for sharing. I took a look at the Zork I beta thread. Wow, that was weird... and cool... but weird again. Someone has put in a lot of work into that bot.
When starting working on this mod I did a huge research job to see if it could be done. It surprised me that I couldn't remember the rainbow because it's one of the things you have to use to solve the game.
Awesome!
I want to sing too!
That is so cool! I've always wanted to walk on a rainbow (to find the hidden treasure on the other side, of course!) ;p
Sheer magic Nihlar! :) :) :)
